Under floor heating is a long-established form of central heating, which has recently grown in popularity. Modern under floor heating systems are either electric or warm water systems and can be used at ground level and above with concrete and wooden floors. Any floor covering can be placed on top of the floor although different types (carpet, tiles etc.) affect performance.
Under floor heating is invisible above ground and does not use up wall space with unattractive heating apparatus such as radiators. In a sense the entire floor is a radiator although due to its area it does not need to attain as high temperatures as that of a wall radiator. It is particularly popular in public places where hot surfaces can be dangerous or where the heating is preferred unseen.
Although initially warm water under floor heating is not as cheap to install it often proves more cost-effective in the long run, especially in large properties. Compared to conventional heating systems, energy savings of up to 40% can be achieved due to water returning at lower temperatures. If fitted correctly and with no joints used in the piping, under floor heating is practically maintenance free with the piping used having a lifespan of approximately 100 years.
Electric under floor heating benefits from a very quick installation time depending on the space of the room. It is mainly used in rooms requiring extra heat such as bathrooms, children’s playrooms and basements. Electric heating is also low cost to install and maintenance free.
